Press release

In the light of the Madras High Court restraining TCS from retrenching an employee, ForIT (Forum of IT Professionals) demands that TCS stop retrenching employees till a comprehensive grievance redress al mechanism is put in place. ForIT demands the Government's in the State and in the Centre to intervene in this issue to set up a comprehensive grievance redress al mechanism for the affected employees. It is due to the hard work and commitment of the employees of TCS that it has acquired a brand value and it is unethical, irrational and illegal to ask the very employees to leave the firm.

TCS has officially stated on Twitter that for the first nine months of this year, the involuntary attrition is 2574, which is 0.8 percent of its total employee strength. The figures for the FY 2014 and 2013 are 2203 and 2132 respectively. They have also stated that for the FY 2015, the involuntary attrition is going to be 1%, which means that around 600 more employees will be asked to leave the organisation by the end of FY 2015 ie March 2015.

In a heterogeneous work environment the final ratings awarded to the employees at the end of the appraisal cycle is not a rational and correct rating. At the end of each cycle, the firm rates its employees such that they are force fit in a bell curve. Employees who perform well are given lesser rating just to ensure they are fit in the curve. How fair is it to term employees who are force fit into a lower rating as under-performers? The audio recording circulating in social media also proves that performance is not the sole reason why employees are asked to laid off. In this context and in the light of the HC intervention, the Government has to intervene in this issue and ensure that the employees interests are protected.

Employee lay-off has been a regular phenomenon in the IT/ITES industry. TCS being a IT bellwether resorting to lay-off's in a unrestrained manner will ensure that other firms follow suit. TCS labelling the laid-off employees as under-performers is violating the fundamental right of the citizen ie, Right to Work.

ForIT pledges to be with the TCSers in this tough period and shall strive for the unity of IT professionals in ensuring the job security and protecting our employment.
